Chad Downing Memorial 4-H Scholarship Winners Announced

Five Adams County 4-H teens were awarded Chad Downing Memorial 4-H Scholarships just prior to the start of the Junior Fair Livestock Sale on Saturday, July 16.

Winners of the 2016 scholarships include:

Kylee Applegate: Kylee is the daughter of Gary and Lisa Jo Applegate, West Union. Kyle graduated from North Adams High School and the OVCTC this spring, and she will be attending Wilmington College this fall, where she will pursue a degree in Agriculture Business Management. Kylee is a member of the Nitty Gritty 4-H Club and the Ohio Valley FFA, and she served as treasurer of the Adams County Junior Fair Board for several years.

Kennedy Jones: Kennedy is the daughter of John Paul and Crystal Jones, West Union. She graduated from West Union High School this spring and is set to attend Ohio University this fall, where she will major in English. She hopes one day to be a college-level English professor. Kennedy is a member of the Adams County Beef and More 4-H Club.

Garrett Miller: Garrett is the son of Gary and Janet Miller, West Union. We graduated from West Union High School and will attend Shawnee State University, majoring in Plastics Engineering. Garrett is a member of the Blazing Saddles 4-H Club.

Rebecca Sonner: Rebecca is the daughter of Marty and Suzan Sonner, Seaman. She graduated from North Adams High School this spring and plans to make a career in business and real estate after attending college at Marshall University. Rebecca is a member of the Adams County Beef and More 4-H Club.

Garrett Stanfield: Garrett is the son of Harvey and Greta Stanfield, Manchester. He graduated from Mason County High School in Kentucky, and plans to pursue a degree in Animal Science with an emphasis in genetics from Redlands Community College in El Reno, Oklahoma. After two years there, he plans to transfer to Oklahoma State. Garrett is a member of the Hillcrest Hillbillies 4-H Club.

The Downing family annually provides funding for five or more $500 scholarships in memory of Chad Downing. The application process is announced to all eligible 4-H members each fall, with applications due by the last Friday in February. Selection of the winners is made by the Adams County 4-H Advisory Committee and its designees.
